government over view

In 1965 Ferdinand Marcos was elected president with a reelection in 1969.  I confess I don’t really know about “early achievements”  because the excesses of he and his wife in his later years in office quite eroded anything I might have heard of achievements!

Currently, Benigno Aquino is the president of the Philippines.   He’s a bachelor.

Under Corazon Aquino (father of Benigno  Aquino)  the constitution was revised to a presidential system with three individual branches:  executive, legislative and judicial.    Those three branches of government sound familiar to me!

The three main island groups (Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao) are divided into 17 regions, 80 provinces—each province has its own governor.   The provinces are divided into districts and each district has a representative to congress.        Each district is divided into municipalities (1, 496 of them!) and each municipality headed by a mayor.        Each municipality consists of territories or communities called barangays  (42, 025 of those!)  headed by a chair person.    Historically, a barangay  (after vessels used by early settlers) was a small community --often a kinship group—of 50 to 100 families, headed by a chief.   Today the barangay government has executive, legislative and adjudicatory powers.
